Inaugurated in 1973 to provide off-site support to Electric Boat’s Groton naval yard, the over 125-acre Quonset Point facility is widely known for its fabrication, equipment, and modular construction capacity.

The construction project for buildings 9A and 9B began in June 2018, and was inaugurated in February 2020. The two buildings, 125,000 square feet and 200,000 square feet respectively, are unusual in that they connect to form one single structure. It was the largest construction project undertaken in Rhode Island. The facility is currently used for nuclear submarines assembly.

ADF was contracted for the fabrication, installation, connection engineering, and painting of both buildings. The biggest challenge in this project was the complexity of the roof trusses and the quadruple columns, all of which were of an imposing size.

The installation itself was also a significant challenge because we had to use a 268-ton crane, the largest ever used in the history of Rhode Island.
