Arthur Ashe Stadium is a tennis stadium located in Flushing Meadows – Corona Park in Queens, in the United States. It is part of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center and hosts the US Open. With a capacity of 23,771 spectators, it is the largest stadium in the world dedicated to tennis.
Built in 1997, the stadium did not have a roof. It was therefore in 2013 that the project of a lightweight retractable roof designed to close in five minutes was launched, then completed in 2016. The roof of Arthur Ashe Stadium is independent of the stadium and the stands, thus supporting its own weight. This is a crucial factor given the clayey nature of the soil.
For this project, ADF was subcontracted to fabricate and apply the cladding to the corner columns, gutter trusses, and three-dimensional trellises. It was a sizable challenge with heavy construction and complex engineering work.
