General Dynamics Electric Boat Universal Buildings 9A & 9B are 125,000 sq ft and 200,000 sq ft respectively and connect to form one single structure. The facility is currently used for nuclear submarine assembly.
ADF was awarded the contract for the connection engineering, fabrication, painting and installation of the steel structures of both buildings. The biggest challenge for the Electric Boat Universal Buildings was the complexity of the roof trusses and the quadruple columns, all of which were of an imposing size. The installation itself was also a significant challenge because we had to use a 268-ton crane, the largest ever used in the history of Rhode Island.
